The first thing that I noticed about Jamie Davis is his remarkable link to the rich voiced baritones of Jazz’s golden years, namely Earl Coleman and others of that era.
Speaking of Earl Coleman with whom I played. I got chills listening to the opening track “Blue Skies” Davis brought me back to time of non affected jazz.
My toes are tapping to “Pennies from Heaven” Jamie Davis is as hip as hip gets on this tune. Superb articulation and a solid sense of time make listening to this number pure magic. I am in one helluva good bag...
“If You Want Me To Stay” The message on this song is clear as crystal. Sing the song and swing like you mean it and Davis has all the equipment to do just that. A solid sax solo rounds out a brilliant tune. “Round Midnight” This is a perfect tune for this singer. The melody is unique in many ways and Davis weaves the lyrics superbly.
Jamie Davis has all the attributes that a pure jazz vocalist requires and then some. As I mentioned Earl Coleman and I were close so it was with a great deal of pleasure that I happily listened and wrote some thoughts. Great arrangements, great singing, great tunes make this a joyful listening experience. I feel I should know Jamie Davis and perhaps I will before the curtain drops.
