Review by Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz Magazine
July 14, 2006
CD Review: The following review appeared in the July/August issue of "Jersey Jazz Magazine."
The jazz vocal scene has, of late, been dominated
by vocalists from the distaff side of the ledger. Jamie Davis is trying
to help balance the scales. "It's a Good Thing" (Unity Music
- 2517) gets him off on the right path.
Singing with a big band that includes many of
the musicians with whom he worked on the Count Basie Orchestra, Davis presents
his deep baritone in a most appropriate setting. The twelve-song program
includes a very hip take on "Straight No Chaser," two classics
from the Basie book, "Ev'ry Day I Have the Blues" and "Alright, Okay, You
Win;" several standards, "I've Got the World on a String," "Night and Day,"
"Beseme Mucho," "My Funny Valentine" and "My Kinda Love;" and
three tunes of a more contemporary origin, "Isn't She Lovely," "Something"
and "Another Star."
Davis is a strong singer, with a voice that commands attention,
and has an easy sense of swing. Hopefully, this disc will receive the kind
of airplay that it deserves, and can open new doors for Jamie Davis.
