It has taken half a century for someone to think of what Scotty Barnhart does on this recording of John Coltrane’s ‘Giant Steps’ but imagination is never too late in art. Scotty Barnhart thoughtfully selected one of the most difficult tunes ever written the to be his opening track for his debut recording, ‘Say It Plain’ and combined rhythm and harmony making it an ingenious and timeless performance.
Barnhart is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at Florida State University, in his 17th year as a featured soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra, and has performed or recorded with a range of musicians from Marsalis to Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. He has also written The World of Jazz Trumpet, which is not only the first work of its kind but has an introduction by Clark Terry and the late exceedingly great Freddie Hubbard. And now to add, Scotty Barnhart has produced a recording in ‘Say It Plain’ that meets all of the fundamentals of jazz--4/4 swing, the blues, ballads, and a touch of "Latin" rhythms with Dizzy Gillespie’s ‘Con Alma’.Barnhart’s glorious, playful warm tones are complemented by his selection of other players, trumpeters Wynton Marsalis and Grand Master Clark Terry giving his humour on ‘Pay Me My Money’, pianists Ellis Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Bruce Barth, percussionist Herlin Riley, saxophonist Todd Williams and vocalist Jamie Davis on ‘Young At Heart’.You will not regret spending the time to listen or allowing yourself to be touched by the humanity of ‘Say It Plain’. This music can do what all good art always does: It reminds us of who we are, what we know, what we have been, and just how adequate our dreams might be.
